Roles
User roles are collections of permissions giving users access to specific FDM functions and capabilities. This simplifies the assigning of permissions to individual users (that is, to their user accounts). Assigning a user to a role is equivalent to giving the user all the permissions for that role.
FDM recognizes two user account types within any business unit—server user accounts and mobile user accounts. Server user accounts only have access to the FDM server software, while mobile user accounts only have access to the FDM mobile application software. User accounts may also be designated as both server and user account types, who have access to both the server and the mobile software.
When an FDM system administrator creates a new business unit, the system automatically creates the following default user roles with default permissions:
- Manager
- Dispatcher
- CSR (customer service representative)
- FSR (field service representative)
Manager, dispatcher, and CSR are defined as server user roles and their permissions are limited to server functions. FSR is defined as a mobile user role and its permissions are limited to mobile application functions.
These default roles are designed to meet the needs of most organizations that use FDM. However, you can modify their permissions through the Roles view, and you can also create new roles and assign permissions to them.
In a new FDM system, the system administrator sets up user identities for all business units in the system and configures them as server or mobile users. He or she creates user accounts (for more information, see User Accounts) and assigns them manager roles in each business unit. In turn, the managers log on and set up the remaining user accounts for their business units and assign roles to them.
